Spring 2024 Toombs County Scrap Tire Amnesty Week

April 15, 2024 – April 19, 2024

The Scrap Tire Amnesty Day is to prevent illegal dumping of scrap tires on residential and commercial properties, city right-of-ways and county right-of-ways.

The Scrap Tire Amnesty Day for Toombs County will take place beginning Monday, April 15, 2024 to Friday, April 19, 2024. This event allows citizens within Toombs County and its municipalities to bring scrap tires to the Toombs County Landfill entrance located on Georgia Hwy. 15, next to the Georgia Forestry, Lyons, Georgia for no charge, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. This event ends at 4:00 PM on April 19, 2024. On April 20, 2024 the normal tire disposal fees for tires will resume.

These scrap tires can only be passenger cars and trucks, non-commercial semi-tractor trailer (Only tires, no rims allowed). No heavy equipment tires, especially skidder tires; can be accepted. No scrap tires accepted from retail tire dealers, or commercial scrap tire generators (Farmers, Loggers, Owner-Operator Semi- Drivers, etc.). The specifications for this event will be strictly enforced by Toombs County and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. There will be no exceptions to the date, times or tire type.

Funding for the program comes from an application by the Toombs County Board of Commissioners to the state Solid Waste Trust Fund, which was established in 1990 as part of the Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Act. In 1992, an amendment to the Act established a primary source of funding for the SWTF in the form of a $1.00 fee on every new tire sold in the state. Each year, fees collected the previous year MAY be appropriated by the General Assembly to EPD.

The Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is a state agency charged with protecting Georgia’s air, land, and water resources through the authority of the state and federal environmental statutes.

2023 Current Tax Digest and 5 Year History of Levy

PURCHASE ENGRAVED BRICK FOR NEW COURTHOUSE Since the creation of Toombs County on August 18, 1905, there have been three courthouses built. The first one was completed in the Fall of 1907. Due to fire, a subsequent courthouse was completed and occupied on February 2, 1920. It would be forty-five years later when the current courthouse was completed in August 1965. Fifty eight years later, Toombs County will complete the fourth courthouse in our one hundred eighteen year history. You can be a part of this historical event by purchasing an engraved brick that will be placed on the grounds of the new courthouse for $100.00/brick.
